What is Metaphysical Fantasy?
What is Metaphysical Fantasy? My recently published fantasy novel, “Pursuit“, is classified as Metaphysical Fantasy. I have seen other books using this classification which really don’t fit. Often such books do not have a metaphysical component. So what exactly is Metaphysics?
The Wikipedia definition: Metaphysics is a traditional branch of philosophy concerned with explaining the fundamental nature of being and the world, although the term is not easily defined. Traditionally, metaphysics attempts to answer two basic questions in the broadest possible terms:
What is there?
What is it like?
I would add: Who am I? Why am I here? It is a an experimental philosophy, and hence a science, examining the nature of existence and life. It assumes an existence beyond this physical world and examines the power of mind over matter.
And thus emerges Metaphysical Fantasy, also called Visionary Fiction. These are works of literature and film which depict a world based on metaphysical ideas. Examples of books in this genre are The Celestine Prophecy and The Alchemist, and now of course there is Pursuit.
“Pursuit” is a story of dragons, mystical creatures full of wisdom and magic. It is a book of dreams, that unconscious gateway into the inner world of spirit. It is a quest of discovery and the pursuit of destiny. “Pursuit” challenges your current way of thinking and presents an alternative reality, one which the reader is challenged to consider. Is there an inner world? Is there a purpose to life? Is there more to life than flesh and blood? And what about the Beyond? Is there something there? These are metaphysical questions dealt with and written about in Metaphysical Fantasy and in my book “Pursuit”. Now all you need do is read it.
